General
Although the JPX series name is mentioned by many golfers in the same breath with 'very forgiving' and 'irons for starters', that is only partly true. Within that JPX series, actually every golfer can find something suitable. This JPX-923 Forged iron set is intended for golfers with mid and low handicaps who want the power and forgiveness of the JPX Hot Metals, but for whom the more compact JPX Tour semi-blade irons are just too difficult to handle. The long-acclaimed Grain Flow Forged process that Mizuno uses in these clubs is maximally noticeable in the sensitivity and 'soft' ball contact. This makes these JPX Forged irons very fine, sensitive but also powerful irons. They are less suitable for beginner and slightly advanced golfers although there is noticeably more forgiveness offered than with the Mizuno JPX Tour model.
The technique
These Mizuno JPX-923 Forged irons are made from a one-piece forged 4120 Chromoly finnished carbon steel. These 923-Forged clubs also share some technology with the JPX 923 Hot Metal irons but the basis is clearly different and much more focused on feel rather than forgiveness. Compared to the JPX-923 Tour, which is also a forged (Forged) iron, this 923-Forged is slightly larger and slightly less sensitive. The ball contact of a Forged steel iron definitely feels softer than with a cast 923 Hot Metal iron and gives a more crisp feedback on what happens during ball contact. This Forged version also does have a cavity behind the striking surface (cavity back) for its forgiving properties but it is much smaller than in the 923 Hot Metal's. This makes the ball flight more controllable, something that appeals to better golfers.
The V-Chassis on which this JPX 923 Forged iron set is built is more stable, dampens resonances and has more of a focus on that soft, comfortable-feeling ball contact. The improved New Core Tech Face (face) delivers maximum power but offers control at the same time. Addressingly, the topline is visibly slimmer than in 923 Hot Metal irons and the ball flight is mid-high for more controllability.
Standard version
In the standard version, these JPX 923 forged irons with steel shafts feature nice KBS S-Taper Lite Chrome Steel Shafts and pleasant GolfPride MCC +4 men's grips but deviating from the standard version is of course always possible.
