Mizuno may not make as much marketing noise as the leaders in this golf market, but what a beautiful new collection of 2022 drivers they have released. These maximum forgiveness Mizuno ST-X 220 drivers have a lot of technology on board to combine power and control. The level of finish is unprecedented.
The technique: more focus on power and forgiveness
The Mizuno ST-X drivers in 2022 are full of interesting innovations. The resilient clubface/face is made from Forged SAT 2041 BETA Titanium: This material retains its properties better and resists micro-cracking longer than the common 6-4 Titanium used by many other major brands. The Cortech Design face material, which varies in thickness, increases the sweet spot while delivering more ball speed over a larger area. The crown (top of the head) at Mizuno has long been made of lightweight carbon. This makes the sole (underside of the head) heavier and the centre of gravity lower, making it easier to launch the ball. These ST-X 220 drivers feature a 20-gram weighting at the back of the head to lower the centre of gravity even further, allowing for more forgiveness on off-centre shots.
Which of the three?
The Mizuno 2022 collection features three different driver models; the ST-X 220, the ST-Z 220 and the ST-G 220. Much of the advanced Mizuno technology is used in all three models but the difference is in the details. This ST-X 220 driver is the version that will appeal to the largest target group (HCP 18-54), with a focus on maximum feathering and a higher, more predictable ball flight. The balanced combination of power and forgiveness. With most of the weight in the back of the head, hitting the ball less than clean isn't so bad. This is combined with not too much spin so you don't lose control over the flight of the ball.
Then there's the ST-Z 220 version, intended for more demanding golfers. This version features a flatter flight (and therefore more length) and a different clubhead balance that allows for more precise ball control and a better feel of what to expect at ball contact. More feedback means you sacrifice a little forgiveness for more length, feel and control. In addition, the amount of spin is lower (better) than with the maximum forgiveness version, making this ST-Z ideal for the more advanced target group of golfers (HCP 0-32). Finally, there is the ST-G 220 version which has the same technology as the ST-Z 220, but with additional adjustment possibilities in terms of clubhead balance. Here the better golfer has more possibilities to adjust the ball flight in detail to his own swing, wishes and preferences.
Loft adjustability... very handy!
The loft adjustability allows you to set the loft of this 220 driver series up to 2 degrees up or down to adjust the height of ball flight to your own swing, technique or preference. The right loft setting might just give you a few extra feet of length. The adjustment key is included.
Standard this ST-X 220 driver has the featherlight Aldila Ascent 50 graphite shaft and standard GolfPride / Mizuno Tour Velvet men's grip. If you would like a different shaft or grip than in the standard version available, there is no extra charge but a longer delivery time.
